The Nittany Lions added a former NFL quarterback to their coaching staff this week: Charlie Frye .  He will now serve as the offensive analyst and analytics coordinator.  He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the 2005 NFL Draft in the third round and would go on to play for the Seahawks and Raiders. Due to injuries, Frye’s NFL career lasted just five years.

Charlie Frye isn’t new to the coaching scene

Since finishing his NFL career in 2009, Charlie Frye has taken on coaching roles at the high school, collegiate and pro levels. After coaching at the high school level for a few years, he was hired at the Director of Player Development at the University of Florida. In 2018, Frye was the wide receivers coach at Ashland University. He then became the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Central Michigan in 2019 and 2020. Last season he was hired by the Miami Dolphins as the team’s quarterback’s coach. With the dismissal of Dolphins head coach Brian Flores, his staff was also out at the end of the season.

How will the hiring help the offense?

Not only does his hiring by James Franklin and Penn State, get him back in the coaching realm, it also will do wonders for the offense. Penn State’s offense, who will enter its second year with Mike Yurcich as offensive coordinator. With the Nittany Lions inability to run the ball last season and a weak offensive line, the offense nearly collapsed in the second half of the season.

Quarterback Sean Clifford will be entering his final season and the depth and talent behind him is superb. Which includes incoming freshman, five-star quarterback Drew Allar. Freshman running back Nick Singleton who was the Gatorade National Player of the Year should revamp the team’s run game. Along with the help of a rebuilt offensive line.

Frye’s experience at quarterback and running an offense should provide an extra set of eyes for the offense. The Nittany Lions offensive line as well as running game were part of the reason for the team’s troubles last season.
